In Recognition of Significant Contributions to DE

Fellows of the Directed Energy Professional Society are esteemed members of the Directed Energy community, noted for creative contributions and distinguished service.

Candidates must have at least 10 years of active practice in DE related fields such as high energy lasers, optics and high power microwave technologies. Those that have had the honor to be elevated to the rank of DEPS Fellow are listed below.

  • John Albertine, invested 15 November 2005 in Lihue, Hawaii, was cited for more than thirty-five years of continuing system engineering contributions to Navy and DoD development, integration, and performance testing of directed energy systems; recognized by all three services as a major source of systems expertise for emerging directed energy weapon systems.

  • Jeff Alexander, invested 11 March 2020 in West Point, NY, was cited for his contributions in pulsed power, HPM and RF (radio frequency) source design spanning more than 35 years. Alexander was responsible for the pulsed power leadership of the CHAMP program, which resulted in the first successful integration/ flight demonstration of an HPM payload on a missile.

  • Tim Andreadis, invested 3 November 2009 in San Antonio, Texas, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the United States for enchancing the survivability and effectivenss on our warfighters by investigating the effects of Radio Frequency Directed Energy on electronic threat systems and developing the technology needed to help evaluate the military utility of RF DEW concepts for ship and harbor protection.

  • William Baker, invested on 16 November 2010 in Bethesda, Maryland, was cited for demonstrating exemplary and visionary leadership in Directed Energy. He initiated many ground-breaking programs in pulsed power, high energy particle beams, high power microwaves and other directed energy technologies and applications. Dr. Baker is a founding member of the Directed Energy Professional Society and served two terms as DEPS president.

  • Frederick (Fritz) Benning, invested 13 November 2002 in Monterey, California, was cited for forty-six years of outstanding contributions to and leadership of the programs that are the foundation for directed energy in our nation.

  • Jorge Beraun, invested 1 November 2006 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cited for significant contributions to the field of Directed Energy. He is one of this country’s leading experts in laser lethality and target vulnerability studies.

  • Kenneth Billman, invested 13 November 2002 in Monterey, California, was cited for a lifetime of developing Directed Energy, and especially for recent contributions to the Airborne Laser Beam Control System.

  • Samuel Blankenship, invested 18 November 2013, was cited for guiding DEPS through its formative years, as well as a long career at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. He continued to serve the DE community as the publishing editor for the Journal of Directed Energy until his passing in 2018. DEPS has since named a memorial graduate scholarship award in his honor.

  • Robert Butts, invested 23 October 2003 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cited for 33 years of outstanding contributions to the advancement of High Energy Laser beam control in adaptive optics, tracking and pointing, and in critical support of the Airborne Laser Program through his technical leadership in the AFRL ABL technology program.

  • Ed Duff, invested 10 April 2019 in Destin, Florida, was cited for his more than 40 years of contributions as a technical leader and an innovative advocate for the directed energy community, and is recognized for having originated and lead multiple programs that conceptualized and demonstrated laser weapons.

  • Steven Fiorino, invested on 27 April 2022 in Mobile, Alabama, was cited for outstanding contributions to the development and integration of realistic atmospheric characterizations in DE performance models and field tests; education of military officers and industry partners; and unabated service to DEPS.

  • Jacqueline Gish, invested 20 October 2004 in Rockville, Maryland, was cited for significant contributions to the Directed Energy community through personal technical contributions to laser technology development and the integrity of her management and leadership of solid-state laser research and development.

  • Steve Griffin, iinvested on 27 April 2022 in Mobile, Alabama, was cited for laser line-of-sight jitter experimentation, characterization and mitigation for airborne laser and space applications.

  • Arthur Guenther, invested 23 October 2003 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cited for pioneering leadership in laser induced damage of high power optical materials, revolutionary concepts in optical materials and optics manufacturing, leadership and support to pulsed power technology, and exemplary guidance in enabling the infrastructure of Directed Energy technology.

  • Martin Hubbard, invested on 16 November 2010 in Bethesda, Maryland, was cited for his outstanding leadership of the United Kingdom RF Directed Energy Weapons and Non-Lethal weapons programs. His personal efforts to foster closer ties between the United States and the United Kingdom have resulted in a long string of mutually beneficial joint programs.

  • Dave Kiel, invested on 24 March 2021 during the virtual Annual DE S&T Symposium, was cited for his Exceptional leadership driving Navy DE Programs including the first at sea Laser Weapon System (LaWS) deployment on a Naval Combatant which invigorated significant increases in Navy DE funding and focused development.

  • Demos Kyrazis, invested on 16 November 2010 in Bethesda, Maryland, was cited for his service as program manager for the USAF Airborne Laser Laboratory where he laid the foundation for Directed Energy Weapon Beam Control. After 55 years of service, he is still making fundamental contributions to understanding atmospheric propagation.

  • Charles LaMar, invested on 14 February 2017 in Huntsville, Alabama, was cited for over 30 years of contributions in the fields of high-energy laser lethality and advanced beam control technologies.   • Paul McManamon, invested 26 November 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cited for his development of beam control options for laser weapons, including optical phased array technology.

  • Paul Merritt, invested 28 February 2018 in Oxnard, California, was cited for his 43 years of revolutionary achievements in beam control, pointing and tracking techniques, for high energy laser systems, and his extensive contributions to the Airborne Laser and Space Based Laser programs.

  • Tom Meyer, invested 18 November 2013, was cited for his numerous contributions to the development of high energy laser technologies, his leadership of the Directed Energy program office for the Strategic Defense Initiative, as well as leadership in DE efforts at both DARPA and the AF Research Lab.

  • Stephanie Miller, invested 18 November 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii, was cited for leadership in the fields of radio frequency radiation bioeffects and non-lethal directed energy weapons development, including technical contributions to the development of the Active Denial System.

  • George Neil, invested 1 November 2006 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cited for constructing and bringing into operation the world’s most powerful CW Free-Electron Laser at 10 kW, also the world’s first FEL to lase at the second and fifth harmonics. He also performed the first demonstration of FEL oscillation with a tapered wiggler for high efficiency and the first measurement of optical beam quality in an FEL.

Nominating a DEPS Fellow

Individuals nominated for selection as a DEPS Fellow must have at least 10 years of active practice in DE-related fields. In addition, both the candidate and the nominator must be a current member of DEPS. It is suggested that you obtain a copy of your candidate's resume as it should provide most of the details that are required the nomination.

Members of the DEPS Board of Directors, the DEPS Board of Scientific and Engineering Advisors, and the DEPS professional staff are not eligible to be nominated as Fellows.

Nomination Deadline
Nominations are accepted throughout the year, but new Fellows are announced only once, generally at the Annual DE Science & Technology Symposium in the Spring. Completed nomination packages received after 1 November of any one year will be put in the pool for the next year.
